well, when I started applying to universities I just knew that I should pass TOEFL or IELTS
that time I selected TOEFL, but now I will recommend IELTES because it can be useful if,later, you want to apply for immigration as well. Also, regarding to changes in TOEFL and next generation TOEFL, there is no difference between them related to difficulty.
There are some book that I studies for being prepared for this exam:
1- Longman series
2- ETS standard Test books
3- Grammer in use & Vocabulary in use series
But, I strongly recommend you first decide to which exam you will attend then based on the exam select suitable reading staffs. These exams are just like "Konkoor" so you should be prepared for them not just improving your everyday english.
